From the Navy Office of Community Outreach:
A Loves Park, Illinois, native is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard USS Vermont, one of the world’s most advanced nuclear-powered submarines. Petty Officer 3rd Class Coltin Carlson, a 2019 Harlem High School graduate, joined the Navy two years ago.
“I wanted to be a nuclear engineer, and the Navy offered the opportunity to learn what I need to one day be a nuclear plant operator,” said Carlson.
According to Carlson, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Loves Park.
“I learned the importance of getting along with other people,” said Carlson. “It makes it easier to work with other people from all different kinds of backgrounds.”
Fast, maneuverable and technically advanced, submarines are some of the most versatile ships in the Navy, capable of silently conducting a variety of missions around the world. As a member of the U.S. Navy, Carlson, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.
“Submarine service is a close community,” added Carlson. “We’re going to know everyone on the boat. We’re like a family and support each other.”
