ROCKFORD — The Office NiteClub is kicking off Pride Month celebrations this weekend with a party that brings food trucks, music and other entertainment to downtown.
The festivities begin at 1 p.m. Saturday with a parade down State Street from Rockford University to the night club, 513 E. State St. Then the Pride Alley Party goes from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. There are pop-up drag performances, live bands, DJs, raffles, drag queen bingo and more.
Pride Month is a time for every individual to be proud of who they are and for the LGBTQIA+ community to celebrate who they are and who they love.
"There are a lot of crazy things going on in the country right now, where a lot of people are having to face stepping back into the closet," drag performer Aunty Heroine said in an interview Tuesday on the B103 Morning Routine. "A lot of people are afraid of what is happening with their rights, so right now is a time to celebrate who you are as a person and be out and proud."

Aunty Heroine is hosting a drag show as part of the festivities. She said seeing others display pride helped her as a child.
"I saw another queer individual one day being themselves as a kid, and I said, 'You know what, I can do that too,'" Aunty Heroine said on B103. "And that's why you should always be yourself because young people are watching you."
The Pride Alley Party also features guest speakers and the dance band Minimal will headline.
Hundreds in the LGBQTIA+ community as well as friends and allies are expected to attend. This event is free and open to the public of all ages.

Cinco de Mayo: The History Behind the Holiday

Today is Cinco de Mayo . . . and it's really the first party holiday since huge numbers of people got the vaccine. So I'm thinking LOTS of people are going to want to live it up today . . . even if they don't know WHY they're living it up.
A survey just asked people what Cinco de Mayo is actually about. And only 10% of people knew the correct answer: Celebrating a major Mexican battle win. The victory was over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.
39% of people thought Cinco de Mayo was Mexico's Independence Day . . . 26% thought it was just a general celebration of Mexican-American culture, 13% admitted they had no idea, and 13% said it's, quote, "an excuse to drink."
The survey also found almost three-quarters of Americans said they planned to do something to celebrate.
59% will eat Mexican food, 32% will drink margaritas, 17% will drink Mexican beer, 14% will go to a party, and 8% will go to a bar.
And finally, 8% of people say they're going to use today to read up on Mexican history.
How are you celebrating today?

Chili's Selling TO-GO Margaritas by the Gallon
One of my favorite things to do is go out with friends and enjoy some margaritas. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many restaurants have been offering to-go cocktails for a while now, but Chili’s has recently announced something even better: gallon margaritas to-go!
Made with tequila and Chili’s house-made mix, the new gallon-sized margaritas were created in celebration of Chili’s upcoming birthday. They’ll be around long after the celebration has ended, however, because they are now on the permanent menu.
