DURAND — Animal rescue centers play a crucial role in preserving and rehabilitating wildlife.

Every year, numerous animals find themselves in distress due to accidents, natural disasters or human interference. The dedicated team of volunteers at Hoo Haven take in these defenseless creatures and provide essential medical care, food and shelter to nurse them back to health.

None of this would be possible without volunteers, which is why Hoo Haven is looking for your help.

"It’s a great opportunity for retired folks looking to fill a day of their time with giving back," said Donald Czyzyk, Hoo Haven's director of marketing and public relations. "Or if you're a father or mother and want to spend quality time with your teens, it’s a unique opportunity. We also have amazing opportunities to high school students or college students looking at getting into the veterinary or agriculture field as a career."

More news: Colorful corner store SRM Prints celebrates grand opening in downtown Rockford

Hoo Haven has free housing for college students who volunteer for a internship. The nonprofit provides college students with an opportunity for hands-on learning about wildlife rehabilitation and the chance to gain insights into the medical care, feeding and rehabilitation processes for different animal species. They also reward college credits for the work.

Learn how you can volunteer and rescue animals HERE.

Rockford radio personality celebrates 10 years cancer-free by raising money for Camp One Step

The diagnosis of cancer is life-altering, especially for children who should be experiencing all of the joys of childhood.

In 2006, at just 9 years old, Ryan Sartori of 95.3 The Bull was diagnosed with leukemia. For the next two-and-a-half years, he and his family spent countless days and hours at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago while he received treatment that would eventually save his life. After five years in remission, Sartori was declared cancer free in 2013.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the end his successful battle with cancer, and to celebrate he wants to give back to an organization that helped him through his entire battle.

"Camp One Step is important to me because of everything they've helped me and my family through," Sartori said. "You go through some dark times with treatment and camp is the bit of light you need to keep going. I've met lifelong friends and experienced life-changing opportunities because of Camp, and this is just my small way of giving back on a day that I may not have reached without their existence."

More news: Tears, prayers as south Rockford prepares for historic vote on Barber-Colman factory's future

Camp One Step is an organization that runs programs for kids who are battling cancer and their families. Camp is a place for kids to be kids without worrying about the outside stressors that are affecting their lives. For Sartori, this is where he met lifelong friends and a support system that would help him face all of the difficulties associated with fighting cancer.

It costs about $1,000 to send one kid to camp and ensure they don’t have to battle cancer alone. But the best part about camp is that it comes at no cost to camper families.

This organization also provides the opportunity for children to come together, form lasting friendships and build memories that will carry them through their cancer journey.

During 95.3 The Bull's show, Sartori raised more than $1,300 for Camp One Step, but he's not stopping there.

He will continue to raise funds for kids battling cancer through Friday, July 14.

Besides brats, which are the highest number of requests, They will also have Johnsonville hot dogs, a veggie-vegan bratwurst and a veggie BBQ.

Both of those will be made separately from the rest of the products and on a separate grill.

More than 15k Flowers To Be Planted At Veterans Memorial Circle In Rockford

By Chelsea Meyer

ROCKFORD — More than 15,000 flowers will be planted next weekend at North Main and Auburn streets as part of a neighborhood group’s ongoing effort to show appreciation to veterans.

This is the fifth year of the volunteer Veterans Memorial Circle beautification project, which was undertaken by west-side residents when the city couldn’t keep pace with the upkeep of the colorful flowers at the intersection. The Friends of Veterans Memorial Circle was born out of a committee of the Churchill’s Grove Neighborhood Association in 2019, but it has support from residents across the city including Signal Hill, North End Square and Edgewater neighborhoods.

“We make sure every veteran knows this is all done for them,” said Army veteran Ernie Redfern, who co-chairs the group with his wife, Helen Karakoudas Redfern. “It really is 100% focused on appreciation for veterans and their families.”

Related: Nonprofit that keeps Rockford roundabout blooming faces financial debt

Karakoudas Redfern said a recent U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs report on preventing veteran suicide said that small things community members do to show care can make a difference for veterans who are struggling. Suicide prevention coordinators from the local VA office were among the earliest volunteers for the project, and they provide resources for veterans and their families at every annual planting.

"Every year, we plant more and more flowers. Last year, we planted just under 15,000," Redfern said. "The circle itself takes a little over 3,000 petunias, just in that circle."

Karakoudas Redfern said when it comes to volunteers, they need a little more than 150 to get the job done in one day. The annual planting day starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, and it is expected to wrap up around 3:30 p.m.

“It’s an annual effort with a perennial commitment,” Karakoudas Redfern said.

The group doesn’t accept any tax money for the project. All flowers and necessities for the volunteers are purchased with money raised from donors in the community. It costs an estimated $9,400 for the beatification project.

  • Four end caps
  • Medians on North Main Street (north and south of roundabout)
  • A long bed in front of Greenwood Cemetery (on Auburn Street)
