ROCKFORD — The city’s first Kung Fu Tea location has closed. The family that had franchised the shop said they’re working on something new for the space.

The Rockford Kung Fu Tea franchise, 6915 E. State St., closed in late December. The franchisees announced the closure Tuesday on social media.

Melanie Nguyen said on Wednesday that the family was working on new plans for a restaurant in the space, but it was too early to share details. She said they hope to provide an update soon.

Kung Fu Tea is a franchise with more than 350 locations across the country. The Rockford shop opened in April 2024 in the shopping plaza that also contains Primetime Audio Video near the corner of State Street and Perryville Road.
