LOVES PARK — The YMCA of Rock River Valley is expanding the fitness center at the Northeast Family YMCA, doubling the size of the space and adding 24-hour access to patrons with upgraded membership.

The 18-year-old facility, at 8451 Orth Road, will add 4,000 square feet of fitness space by taking over the area on the front of the building formerly occupied by UW Health physical therapy.

Walls will be removed to connect the two spaces and provide an open flow. New flooring and additional equipment will be added, including a new EGYM Smart Circuit, which was previously introduced in the region at the Swedish American Riverfront Y. EGYM machines automatically adjust to the user’s custom settings for weight, range of motion and cardiovascular exercise. Users are then guided through a full-body workout in about 20 minutes.

The $800,000 renovation also includes new plate-loaded strength equipment, including six half racks with platforms for heavy lifting with bumper plates, an additional leg press and chest press. Other new equipment includes a hack squat, glute drive, leg press and seated calf machines.

The Northeast Y will continue to have the same hours of operation, but an upgraded membership option will provide access to the fitness center 24 hours a day.

“We tested this model at the Puri Family YMCA and it is working great,” Melissa Burns, vice president of operations for the YMCA of Rock River Valley, said in a news release.  “We know our members are seeking a healthy lifestyle, but their schedule doesn’t always align with our hours. This new benefit will hopefully remove barriers for Y members and allow them to focus on their well-being when it works best for them.”

The Northeast Family YMCA opened in 2007. This will be the first major renovation designed to add amenities and attract new families.

“Our cardio and weight rooms are one of the highest used areas in the Y and we noticed members were having to wait to use equipment,” Executive Director Becca Homb said in a news release. “This investment allows us to better serve our members, while making space for potential new members.”

Schmeling Construction and 1919 Architects are leading the project. Construction is underway and is expected to be complete by the end of January.
