ROSCOE — A new business centered on sound healing, meditation and other relaxing practices aims to provide a sanctuary from stress.

Access Soul High Frequency Sanctuary will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday at 11824 Main St., which is on the north side of the building that includes Ambitious Ink along Illinois 251.

Founders Kelly Joy and Jim Simmons have been providing sound baths for about 15 years, but this will be their first physical studio. The ancient meditative practice uses instruments to figuratively soak people in vibrations and create a relaxing experience. At Access Soul, they’re two of seven practitioners offering a variety of services from reiki to massage, tarot readings, myofascial release, neurokinetic therapy, guided journeys and tuning fork therapy, among other options.

The also offer weekly meditation gatherings, which are donation based. They’re hosted every Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday at noon. You don’t need any experience or specific faith or spirituality to find relaxation and stress relief in the practice, the owners say.

“You can be super religious or not at all. It’s very inclusive,” Kelly Joy Simmons said. “If you just need to find some peace to be able to navigate life differently. That does make a ripple effect. If we can just find our calm and go about our day from that it changes everything. For people who are curious, or just want to know if it’s possible that they can find a little more peace, give it a try.”

The meditations are considered a good entry point for people who are curious about the various practices at Access Soul.

“It’s a different approach to finding stillness. It’s very relaxing, it’s soothing,” Jim Simmons said. “On occasion there will be someone who falls asleep. … That’s a big part of being able to destress is just to let go and just relax.”

The Simmons have been working with singing bowls and other instruments long before events were mainstream.

“We had only singing bowls in the beginning, and no one around here knew what they were. Now you can buy a singing bowl at WalMart, but we find many people still do not know about sound healing,” Kelly Joy Simmons said. “We want to offer this experience on a regular – and affordable – basis so folks can feel for themselves how deeply relaxing and transformative it is.”

The couple’s sound immersions now include quartz crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, a gong, chimes, a rain stick, thunder barrel, ocean drum, and Native American flute, among other instruments.

They don’t use any sheet music, but play off intuition while attendees sit in reclining zero gravity chairs with blankets and calming lighting.

They said the benefits include reducing cortisol levels, alleviating chronic pain, and reducing inflammation, among several others.

“We’ve had people feel immediate pain relief that lasts and other physical relief, and many people experience mental, emotional and spiritual shifts,” Kelly Joy Simmons said. “Science backs this up, and the results people have speak for themselves.”
