MACHESNEY PARK — The village has provided $7,000 to support Helping Hands Pantry amid growing food insecurity with the loss of SNAP benefits.

The Village Board presented a check to the nonprofit on Monday, two days after Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits were halted due to the government shutdown.

“With the uncertainty around SNAP benefits and the holiday season on the horizon, the village’s support is more important than ever,” Mayor Steve Johnson said in a news release. “We are proud to be long-time supporters of Helping Hands Pantry.”

Helping Hands Pantry, 7620 Elm Ave., has served Machesney Park and Loves Park since 2003. It provides food to more than 400 families each month.

The pantry is operated by volunteers and 100% of donations go to purchase groceries for those in need.
