MACHESNEY PARK — The first and only Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in the region abruptly closed Thursday after more than three years in business.

Signage for the restaurant at 9901 Orlando St. has been stripped off the building and a note was posted on the door saying it was permanently closed.

“Thank you to the many guests who visited us at this location,” a sign on the door reads.

Messages left for Freddy’s corporate officers were not immediately returned. A person on site Friday morning said they could not comment. Work was underway to decommission the space.

The Wichita, Kansas-based chain opened in Machesney Park in April 2022 after supply-chain issues had forced delays. At the time it was the 17th Freddy’s in Illinois. There are now 15 Freddy’s in the state and three in Wisconsin, according to the company’s website.

There are more than 500 Freddy’s locations in 36 states across the country.

The restaurant is known for its cooked-to-order steakburgers, shoestring fries, all-beef hot dogs and frozen custard.
