ROCKFORD — The average cost of a gallon of fuel in the city has fallen to its lowest level to start the week since January 2024, according to data from GasBuddy.
The average price at the pump was $2.91 per gallon on Monday, according to the tech company’s survey of 139 Rockford stations. The cost had dropped nearly 13 cents in one week.
Prices in Rockford are 28 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 39 cents per gallon lower than this time a year ago.
Falling prices here and across the country can largely be attributed to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries ramping up oil production this year, analysts say.
OPEC+ members led by Saudi Arabia agreed to increase oil production by 137,000 barrels per day in October. Earlier this month, they agreed to continue that output increase again in November, according to multiple international news reports. The organization has been reversing voluntary cuts and increasing oil production for much of the year.
Nationally, the average cost of a gallon of gas is $2.98 as of Monday, according to GasBuddy.
“Gas prices have finally fallen below $3 per gallon nationally— the earliest date we’ve seen a $2.99 national average since 2020, when COVID was the primary driver of low prices,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a news release.
The last time Rockford gas prices were sub-$3 to start the week was Jan. 8, 2024, when the per-gallon price stood at $2.87. Prices haven’t been this low on Oct. 20 since 2020, when the cost was $2.21 in Rockford and $2.15 nationally, according to GasBuddy data.
“OPEC+ deserves much of the credit for this trend, having steadily raised oil production for much of 2025. Currently, 35 states have average gas prices below $2.99/gal, and GasBuddy even recorded the first $1.99 cash price at a station in Evans, Colorado, with stations in Oklahoma and Texas not far behind,” De Haan said. “Barring any major disruptions, gas prices are likely to remain slightly below year-ago levels and could stay under $3 for much of the next few months.”
