ROCKFORD — The largest two-year college women’s volleyball tournament in the country returns to the UW Health Sports Factory this weekend, drawing hundreds of student-athletes and thousands of spectators.
The National Junior College Athletic Association All In Volleyball Opening Weekend Tournament takes place Friday through Sunday at the facility at 305 S. Madison St. in downtown.
There are 81 college programs from 18 states and 15 NJCAA regions participating. That includes many top-ranked teams in divisions I, II and III, said Devonie McLarty, head official for the tournament.

There will be about 1,550 players, 200 coaches, 45 officials and an estimated 6,000 spectators, according to GoRockford. The combination will lead to 450 hotel room nights and an estimated economic impact of more than $1.2 million.
“Hosting the Opening Weekend Tournament is not only a chance to see world-class collegiate volleyball, it’s also a tremendous driver of economic activity for Rockford,” said Lindsay Arellano, vice president of sales and service for GoRockford. “The growth of this tournament reflects the strength of our partnerships and the support of our local hospitality community. From hotels to restaurants to attractions, the entire region benefits.”

This is the sixth year of the event and the fifth time it’s been held in Rockford.
“Many of the athletes and families are returning guests, and we are excited to to provide them another outstanding experience,” said Milton Phillips, supervisor of the UW Health Sports Factory. “With this being the largest volleyball tournament in the history of our area, it’s more than just a prestigious sporting event; it’s an economic driver for our region that will have a major financial and social impact.”
