BELVIDERE — The YMCA of Rock River Valley has taken over management responsibilities of the Belvidere Family YMCA, a move it says will help sustain the Y’s future in Belvidere and improve its services.

The partnership was announced this week by the board of directors for both YMCAs.

“We’ve seen a decline in our membership, making it difficult to operate independently,” Belvidere Family YMCA Executive Director Cherie Dollinger said in a news release. “This partnership brings fresh ideas and more resources to our community, so we can work on growing our membership and financial support.”

The Belvidere YMCA opened in 1903 and expanded in 1967, according to Dollinger. She has now joined the YMCA of Rock River Valley and will remain in Belvidere as the facility’s on-site leader.

Both Ys remain independent entities under the management agreement.

“By partnering and sharing resources, we can help expand YMCA membership, programs and services in Boone County, which strengthens the YMCA movement for all,” said Brent Pentenburg, CEO of the YMCA of Rock River Valley, which has six branches serving nearly 50,000 people.

Belvidere Family YMCA members are still able to use YMCA of Rock River Valley facilities, and vice-versa, through the Y’s nationwide membership.
