ROCKFORD — Rockford Art Deli and Bucciferro Family McDonald’s are marking the return of the Snack Wrap with a collaboration that celebrates Rockford pride and McDonald’s nostalgia.
The locally owned businesses will release a pair of limited edition T-shirts on Thursday to coincide with the fan-favorite chicken wrap returning to McDonald’s menu for the first time in years. They’re also using the hype to help a local nonprofit, with $3 from each shirt sale going to support the Family Peace Center, which helps survivors of domestic and interpersonal violence.
“We’ve been supporting them for years with food donations, helping support them financially,” said Rich Wolter, public relations manager for the Bucciferro Family McDonald’s, a local company that runs three dozen McDonald’s. “We love what they do. Their team is outstanding. We thought this was a cool way for us to do something more.”
One design features Grimace, the Hamburglar and Birdie — characters introduced in 1980s-era McDonald’s advertisements — hanging out with Ronald McDonald under Symbol, the 47-foot tall sculpture created by Alexander Liberman. The other design shows a sock monkey holding a snack wrap. Both can be preordered online at rockfordartdeli.com. The shirts were designed by Kristian Coltman, Rockford Art Deli’s creative director.
You can also win one of the T-shirts by making a purchase at any of the eight Bucciferro Family McDonald’s in the city (locations listed below). If you get served a golden bag with your order between Thursday and Monday, you’ll get a ticket for the Bucciferro/RAD T-shirt.
There will be five T-shirt winners selected at random at each of the eight locations each day for five days, totaling 200 winners.
“We love collabing with cool places in town,” said Jarrod Hennis, owner of Rockford Art Deli. “It’s mostly just exciting to see people wearing a Rockford-themed McDonald’s shirt in the area.
“Good or bad, whatever people like or don’t like about McDonald’s, it’s still very popular, it’s very nostalgic. It’s a household name, then we get to bring our flair to it and bring our design skills to a mega corporate company that’s been around forever.”
The Snack Wrap was initially discontinued at most locations in 2016, although it continued at some franchises until 2020. The McCrispy chicken strip topped with shredded lettuce and cheese is wrapped in a flour tortilla.
It’s return stirred hype for fans who missed the wrap, and Hennis and Wolter decided to partner on a T-shirt and promotion.
Rockford Art Deli, 402 E. State St., is a custom print shop, clothing and merchandise store founded in 2004. It’s best known for its clothing promoting Rockford pride, including the 815 shirt.
Bucciferro Family McDonald’s opened its first location in 2008 in Beloit, Wisconsin. The family-owned business now runs 36 restaurants in 21 cities in Wisconsin and Illinois. Its biggest presence is in Rockford.
Hennis said many people may not realize that a local family is behind multiple area McDonald’s, or the various ways they support the community.
“I look at it 100% as a local small business supporting a local big business,” Hennis said of the collaboration.
Wolter said the family, which operates on a budget independent from the corporate McDonald’s chain, looks for a variety of ways to give back to the community and connect with its customers. He said this collaboration with RAD in support of the Family Peace Center was a perfect fit.
“We really try to choose the opportunities that we have to support in a way where we think it’s going to have a great impact and support something we really believe in, and where we’re going to be able to create that personal relationship that we know is going to grow in the future and be able to connect and spread through the community,” Wolter said.
