MACHESNEY PARK — The village is launching a contest to encourage people to do their back-to-school shopping locally this summer.

The contest runs through Aug. 15, and offers people who spend at least $25 on back-to-school purchases at a Machesney Park business the chance to win up to $200 in Visa gift cards.

Qualifying purchases include school supplies, clothing, electronics, food and lunch prep, dorm or classroom décor, haircuts, technology, and other items that help students prepare for the school year. The contest is open to anyone who submits a receipt totaling at least $25 on qualifying purchases at a Machesney Park store. Online purchases don’t qualify.

“We want to encourage families and teachers to shop locally as they prepare for the school year,” Mayor Steve Johnson said in a news release. “This contest is a new way to support the businesses in our community and give back to shoppers at the same time.”

How to enter

  • Submit your receipt via the contest entry form at machesneypark.org/shoplocal
  • Bring your receipt to Village Hall, 300 Roosevelt Road, and fill out a short entry form

The top prize is a $200 Visa gift card. There will also be a $150 Visa gift card and $100 Visa gift card awarded.

Winners will be selected at random and announced on Aug. 18.

Shoppers can also enter to win a $50 Visa gift card by snapping a selfie at a Machesney Park restaurant or coffee shop, tagging @villageofmachesneypark on Facebook and using the hashtag #MPBack2School. The most liked post by Aug. 18 will win.
