ROCKFORD — Democratic party voters in the city and township will decide today who they want to represent them on the City Council and Rockford Township board of trustees.

There are six contested races for City Council and five people competing for four Democratic Party nominations for township trustee.

The City Council primary races will largely decide the election. Only the 8th Ward has a contested race in the April 1 consolidated election. Democrat Karen Hoffman, the incumbent, is challenged by independent candidate Jason Leviskas. Democratic nominees for township trustee will face Republicans Ginger Haas, Frank Manzullo, Michael E. O’Toole and Eli Nicolosi in April.

Mayor Tom McNamara also faces a challenge on April 1 from independent Derrick Kunz at the top of the ballot.

Tonight’s results will be unofficial until March 11, when final mail-in votes are tallied and the election is certified.

5th Ward

  • Gabrielle Torina (incumbent)
  • Virgil Hobson
  • Christopher Williams

6th Ward

Incumbent Aprel Prunty is unopposed after Lawrence Steward II withdrew from the race on Monday. Steward’s candidacy was scrutinized for a potential violation of the federal Hatch Act, which prohibits certain government employees from running in partisan elections. Steward is a postal worker.

Signage will be placed at 6th Ward polling places notifying voters of the change.
