ROCKFORD — The design team behind the new Rockford Public Library in downtown has received honors for high architectural quality and design.
Studio GWA was bestowed a Citation of Merit Award by the American Institute of Architects Prairie Illinois for its work on the new main branch, 215 N. Wyman St., which opened in June.
The 66,000-square-foot building’s design emphasizes natural light, views overlooking the Rock River and flexible reading and community spaces.
Library officials say despite the building being smaller than its predecessor, which was razed because of an environmental cleanup required on the site, the building’s efficient design has allowed for the library to welcome more visitors and increased library card registrations.
“This award recognizes exceptional architectural design that serves community needs,” Paul Logli, Rockford Public Library board president, said in a news release. “Our new Main Library demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can transform public spaces and enhance civic engagement.”
Studio GWA designed the building in collaboration with Engberg Anderson Architects.
Key features include media and maker labs, exterior rooftop terraces, multipurpose rooms, a two-story gallery, dedicated youth spaces and a quiet reading room overlooking the river.
The library also has street-side services with a drop-off and pick-up window along Wyman Street.
