2 sushi and Asian fusion restaurants under the same management have closed in Rockford

ROCKFORD — A pair of sushi and Asian fusion restaurants under the same management have closed.
Omakase, 223 E. State St. in downtown, and Sushi KO, which filled the former Prime Steakhouse space at 6565 Lexus Drive, both abruptly closed late last year.
The closure came weeks after owner Matt Idzikowski had closed Prime Steakhouse and reopened it as Sushi KO in mid-November with his business partners Steve Han and Kyoung moon Han running the new restaurant. Han had previously taken over management of Omakase from Idzikowski.

Omakase had been in business since 2018 and Sushi KO opened in mid-November, filling the space Prime had occupied since 2022.
Idzikowski declined comment. Han could not be reached.
Omakase has been closed for several weeks without any indication it would reopen.
A notice posted on the entry of Sushi KO says the lease was terminated over nonpayment of $1,016 owed to Four Rivers Sanitation Authority. The landlord, Weis-Morris Square, posted the notice Dec. 16.
Weiss-Morris Square had previously filed suit in October against Idzikowski, alleging he had failed to maintain the alarm system and failed to correct gas leaks on multiple occasions, leading to Nicor putting a lock on the system. That case is due back in court on Jan. 29.
The building that houses Omakase is owned by GT Partners, a subsidiary of Peter Provenzano’s Rockford-based development group Joseph James Partners.
Idzikowski also owns Taco Libre, a street taco shop and tequila bar that opened in December 2023 at 501 E. State St., filling the former Vintage 501. Taco Libre closed in October and the building is listed for sale.
He previously owned Blue Line, a former sports pub across from the BMO Center on Elm Street, which he sold in 2020.
