ROCKFORD — The committee that organizes the Rock River Anything That Floats Race says it needs to see more teams sign up soon or it will be forced to cancel the event.

Six teams have signed up for the 2024 race, which is slated to take place Aug. 18 on the Rock River between the Auburn Street bridge and Prairie Street Brewing Co., 200 Prairie St. You can sign up HERE for a special registration fee of $76.

“We extend a heartfelt thank you to the teams already registered and the sponsors and volunteers who have committed to support the event,” said Reed Sjostrom, a member of the race steering committee. “We hope everyone will share this news with their friends. We’re counting on our community’s competitive spirit and support to keep the race afloat.”

The special fee is in effect through July 18. The committee said if it doesn’t see a significant uptick in registrations by then, it will cancel the race and issue refunds to all teams and sponsors.

The race made its comeback last year after a three-year hiatus that started when the coronavirus pandemic took hold in 2020. This would be the sixth year of the race in its current form, but it has its roots back to 1976, when it was a “Yanks vs. Brits” raft race held as part of a Fourth of July radio promotion.
