ROCKFORD — A new retailer that helps you gear up for the great outdoors is moving into the Forest Plaza shopping center.
Sierra, an outdoor retailer that’s part of TJX Companies, is under construction at 6449 E. State St., which is between Office Max and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Contractors took out a building permit June 27 valued at $750,000 to remodel the space for Sierra, according to information from the city’s building department. A planned opening date has not been set.

The business was founded as a catalog company called Sierra Trading Post in Reno, Nevada, in 1986. Four years later it opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Sparks, Nevada.

The company grew as both an online and in-person retailer before it was acquired by TJX Companies in 2012. TJX is the company behind familiar retailers such as Marshalls, HomeGoods and TJ Maxx.
It’s unclear when hiring will ramp up. The company has an assistant store manager position posted for the Rockford location on jobs.tjx.com.
