ROCKFORD — The Kjellstrom Family Foundation has donated $15,000 toward Rockford University’s Regents First program, which aims to recruit, retain and support first-generation college students.

Karen Walker, dean of academic support at the Center for Learning Strategies and founder of the Regents First program, said the funds will likely be used to add support staff.

“The more people that we have, the more hands on deck, the more students we can support,” she said in a news release.

The program is designed to support first-generation college students during their first year of college, but additional funding enables the support to continue through the subsequent three years toward obtaining their degree.

“It allows us to strengthen what we currently do,” she said. “Receiving this grant will allow us to continue ensuring that students are successful at Rockford University, and not just in their first year, but the duration of their time with us.”

The Kjellstrom Family Foundation was established in honor of Janet Kjellstrom, a Rockford native and philanthropist who died in 2017 at age 92.
