ROCKFORD — The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a scam phone call in which the perpetrator claims to be the department’s chief deputy.
The office warned that several residents reported receiving a phone call from someone who claims to be Chief Deputy Rick Ciganek.
“The caller has attempted to obtain money from the victims by stating they have a warrant for their arrest and will try and solicit money to vacate the warrant,” the department said in a news release.

The sheriff’s office said you should never provide your personal credit card or bank information to an unsolicited caller.
“The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office does not call residents to tell them they have an outstanding warrant nor ask for any money,” it said in a news release.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who receives a similar call to report it immediately by call the non-emergency number at 815-282-2600.
