ROCKFORD — Gas prices have risen across the city for the second consecutive week, bringing the price at the pump to its highest average since Aug. 15.

The average gasoline price in Rockford is up 15 cents in the past week to $4.05 today, according to GasBuddys’ survey of 139 stations in Rockford. It’s the first time since Aug. 22 a week has started with an average price of $4 or more. The highest price to start the week this year was $5.26 on June 13.

According to GasBuddy, the most expensive gas sold in the city Sunday was priced at $4.39 per gallon, while the cheapest station was $3.34.

Average prices in Rockford are 25 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 75 cents higher than a year ago.

The increase here follows what’s happening across much of the country. The national average price of gasoline is up 11 cents per gallon this week to an average of $3.78, according to GasBuddy. That’s about the same price it stood at a month ago and nearly 60 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

“Some West Coast states saw prices rise 35 to 55 cents per gallon in the last week as refinery issues continued to impact gasoline supply, which fell to its lowest level in a decade in the region, causing prices to skyrocket,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, in a news release. “While I’m hopeful there will eventually be relief, prices could go a bit higher before cooling off. In addition, OPEC could decide to cut oil production by a million barrels as the global economy slows down, potentially creating a catalyst that could push gas prices up further.”
