ROCKFORD — Gas prices fell 8 cents per gallon in the city this week, the first price decline after three straight weeks of increases.

According to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations in Rockford, gas prices averaged $4.24 per gallon Monday. The cheapest station priced at $3.59 and most expensive at $4.39.

The national gas average has also fallen, dropping $3.86 cents per gallon. However, that’s still up nearly 21 cents per gallon compared to a month ago.

“After a sharp rise in the national average over the last few weeks, we’ve seen an abrupt, yet expected decline as refinery issues have eased in the West and Great Lakes, overpowering some increases elsewhere,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Though at the same time, diesel prices have soared.”

The national diesel average has increased nearly 19 cents peer gallon and sits at $5.06 per gallon.
