ROCKFORD — Subway is moving out of Alpine Plaza and into the former Taco John’s across the street.
The restaurant franchise is remodeling the shuttered taco shop at 3629 S. Alpine Road with a goal of opening later this month.
It has closed the Alpine Plaza store, 3220 S. Alpine Road, while the remodeling underway. A sign is posted on the Alpine Plaza location letting customers know to look for it in the Taco John’s space soon.

The new space allows Subway to offer drive-thru service, something the franchise has targeted with its new acquisitions, according to several industry reports. At least one other Subway in Rockford, at 3798 E. State St., has drive-thru service. The chain has dozens of locations in the Rockford area.
Subway is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world, serving freshly made sandwichs, wraps and more in more than 37,000 locations across more than 100 countries.
Taco John’s closed its South Alpine shop in January. The Mexican quick-service restaurant chain still has an area location at 8304 N. Second St. in Machesney Park, which is one of a dozen other shops in Illinois.
