ROCKFORD — Gas prices in the city and across the country continue to decline, hitting the longest downward streak in seven years.
Still, the cost of a gallon of gas here is about 39 cents higher than this time a year ago.
According to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations in Rockford, the average price of gas sits at $3.66 per gallon. That’s down about 6 cents per gallon in the last week.
While the price of gas has now dropped for 14 straight weeks, it’s possible that this trend could end soon, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“With a 14th consecutive weekly decline, the national average price of gasoline has now surpassed 2018’s record decline, seeing its longest downward streak since 2015,” De Haan said in a news release. “With some issues arising in Plains and Great Lakes states as the transition to winter gasoline begins, I think we have the best potential to see the weekly trend of falling prices snapped.”
GasBuddy also reported that the cheapest station in Rockford was priced at $3.37 per gallon on Monday, while the most expensive was $4.15 per gallon.
The national average also continues to drop, falling nearly 4 cents per gallon in the last week to an average of $3.64 per gallon.

“While some states continue to see gas prices trend higher, the majority have continued to decline,” De Haan said. “While gasoline could nudge higher, diesel prices should continue to ease after a much-needed jump in inventories last week.”
