ROCKFORD — Gas prices across the city have fallen for an 11th straight week, dipping below an average of $4 per gallon for the first time since late February.

The average cost of a gallon of gas fell more than 12 cents per gallon to $3.87, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 139 stations here.

Prices are now about 60 cents per gallon lower than a month ago but still stand 66 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

The national average price of gasoline also declined, falling about 5 cents per gallon to an average of $3.81, according to GasBuddy.

The national average is down nearly 40 cents per gallon from a month ago, but it’s 69 cents higher than this time a year ago.

Gas prices are now $1.20 per gallon lower than mid-June with Americans spending $450 million less on gasoline every day as a result,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a news release. “Some issues have developed that we’re keeping a close eye on, including the shut down of the largest refinery in the Midwest. While that refinery may get back online sooner rather than later, it’s not impossible that down the road the situation could impact prices in the region.”

De Haan said he expects prices will continue decline in the rest of the country, but that will depend on how hurricane season affects supply.

“It does appear that the tropics are starting to see some activity, so there’s no guarantee the decline will continue,” he said.
