ROCKFORD — KFC has started making repairs to its location on 11th Street that was condemned in May after a gas leak was discovered at the property.
However, it’s unclear when the restaurant may reopen.
The city of Rockford has issued building permits for roof work, mechanical fixes and plumbing within the last two weeks, according to Karl Franzen, the city’s director of community and economic development.
“I am not aware of firm timeline for completion, however,” Franzen said in a response to a message from the Rock River Current.
Calls and email messages left for KFC were not returned.
Chain restaurant news: Sonic in Cherry Valley indicates no plans to reopen
The restaurant at 3035 11th St. was condemned May 10 after a gas leak and a subsequent city inspection. That order means it can’t reopen until issues noted in the condemnation are addressed.
The property inspection report, which was obtained by the Rock River Current under a Freedom of Information Act request, stated a 2-inch gas main into the building was “deteriorated and leaking severely.” That service was then shut off by Nicor until repairs can be made.
The report also said that walking surfaces inside were extremely greasy, describing it “like trying to walk on black ice.” It also said the men’s restroom must be repaired before the restaurant can reopen.
