Community Foundation awards scholarships to 140 students worth nearly $373K

ROCKFORD — The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois has awarded 140 students scholarships worth $372,651.
The scholarships will support the post-secondary educational aspirations of local students from 25 high schools.
Most of the recipients are graduating high school seniors in Boone, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties. You can see the list of recipients here or below. Some of the scholarships are renewable for up to four years.
“A scholarship is more than a check, it is a down payment on the future of our community,” Dan Ross, president of the Community Foundation, said in a news release. “Each year we are reminded that the past generosity of donors, the present commitment of volunteers, and the ongoing exceptional efforts of local students are all part of building our future. If the CFNIL Scholarship Class of 2022 is any indication, that future will be very bright.”

Since 2000, the Community Foundation has now awarded more than $4 million to local students.
Scholarship applications are reviewed by community volunteers, and a blind review process assures that scholarships are awarded objectively to students who best fit the criteria, the nonprofit said. This year more than 110 volunteers read and scored more than 1,100 scholarship applications.
The recipients represent a diverse mix of backgrounds and academic pursuits. They include academic achievers, non-traditional students, athletes and others pursuing careers in education, STEM, business, fire science, health care and more.
“The diversity of the recipients reflects the diversity of CFNIL’s donors and the communities it serves,” the nonprofit said in a news release.

Scholarship Award Night
The recipients will be celebrated during a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at Klehm Arboretum, 2715 S. Main St. The scholarship award night is back this year after a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. The celebration is open to all recipients, their families, donors and community members.
