In a wider fight for equality in January 2021, Sabrena Ferguson, owner of Meta Beauty Collective in Rockford, decided to turn her salon into a safe space for queer people. Independently run with independent stylists, Meta Beauty Collective accepts people of all ages and genders.

“We’ve gotten a lot of support, and we’ve got non-supportive people as well, but the support that we’re receiving is from the people that we’re trying to help so that’s all that really matters,” Ferguson said in an interview with the B103 Morning Routine. “Everyone’s got an opinion and being queer owned and welcoming to queer people, we’ve been ridiculed for that as well so the biggest challenges have been being openly inclusive and probably the pandemic and all that’s come with that.”

Ferguson is a member of the Rockford Rage roller derby team and LGBTQIA+ community.

“We did a pride event to raise money for the Liam Foundation and we just strive to be a safe space for people and really put it out there that were here to help the community and to make people feel welcome.”

One top of being a full-service hair salon offering cuts, color and treatments, Meta Beauty Collective also offers Reiki healing.
