ROCKFORD — Pam Maher, owner of KMK Media, has had her hands in media, public relations and marketing for years.

Maher, who studied broadcast journalism at Valparaiso University in Indiana, spent the first five years of her career was in television journalism here in Rockford and at a CBS station called KUIC in the tiny town of Mankato in Minnesota. She also worked at the NBC Affiliate WTMJ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“Loved the reporting business, loved talking to people, loved telling their stories, loved doing all those things that make a community what it is and really loved delving into some of that,” Maher said on an interview with the B103 Morning Routine. “But after a while, the commuting and just all of that, I thought, you know, there’s probably other opportunities out there.”

Maher and her husband took a leap of faith and moved back to the Rockford area, where Pam would spend a year working for the American Cancer Society doing community and public relations. There she met her two future business partners.

“They were doing some freelance work at the time and kind of unhappy in their jobs as well, so we thought, ‘well we’ve got nothing to lose, let’s try it,'” Maher said.

She became obsessed with starting her own business, so even on her lunch breaks she would work on her own business.

The business grew over time, and 25 years later Pam Maher is the sole owner of KMK Media, a full-service marketing firm. She says owning the business has been rewarding, exciting and challenging.
