ROCKFORD — More than 500 publicly owned properties are now for sale through the Winnebago County trustee program.

The program is designed to help reduce blight and revitalize neighborhoods by getting abandoned properties acquired by the government back on the tax rolls. Each of the properties for sale had at least three years of delinquent taxes, and no buyer purchased the tax certificate.

Region 1 Planning Council, which was appointed by the Winnebago County board to run the program, announced its online purchasing system went live on Friday.

Properties range from vacant lots to commercial and residential properties. The minimum bid for a vacant lot is $500 and $1,000 for a property that contains a structure.
