ROCKFORD — You will no longer be required to wear a face mask inside courthouses in Boone and Winnebago counties starting Monday.

The date coincides with when Gov. JB Pritzker said the statewide indoor mask mandate in public places would end. You can still choose to wear a mask inside the courthouse, although you may be directed by a judge to remove your face covering if necessary for court purposes.

“This change in practice is consistent with the recent order of the Illinois Supreme Court and current community COVID-19 metrics,” said Judge John Lowry, chief judge of the 17th Circuit Court, in a news release. “The court will continue to monitor its operations and further amendments could be necessary if COVID-19 metrics warrant change. I note that individuals may attend court virtually unless they have been specifically directed to appear in person.”
