The state set another one-day record high for new coronavirus cases with more than 44,000 reported on Thursday.
That broke the record set just a day ago by roughly 12,000 cases.
The latest surge is largely due to the omicron variant, which transmits easily but isn’t considered as deadly as other variants.

There were 44,089 cases reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health on Thursday, breaking the high of 32,279 set a day earlier.
In Winnebago County, there were 576 new cases of the coronavirus reported Thursday, 12 fewer than the record set on Tuesday.
During the surge in late fall and early winter 2020, there were only two times when daily statewide caseloads topped 15,000. That happened with 17,608 daily cases on Nov. 5, 2020, and 15,415 on Nov. 13, 2020.
Hospitalizations across the state are also at an all-time high, with 7,098 as of Wednesday. More than 1,100 of those patients were in intensive care units, according to IDPH data.
