BELVIDERE — Stellantis plans to cut about 400 more jobs at the Belvidere Assembly Plant amid a global semiconductor shortage that has already forced shutdowns and reduced work to one shift.
The layoffs could take place as soon as Jan. 14, according to The Detroit News. Notices were sent to employees on Wednesday. The company says it will try to place laid-off employees into open positions elsewhere in the company.
Stellantis also notified the state of Illinois and the city of Belvidere of the planned layoffs. Earlier this year it eliminated a shift and laid off roughly 1,600 workers.
Meanwhile, state and local officials have been working to secure the future of the plant by trying to incentivize electric vehicle production there. A bill that provides financial incentives and tax credits to manufacturers passed at the end of October, although Stellantis has not said whether it would consider producing electric vehicles at the Belvidere plant.
The Belvidere Assembly Plant is one of the region’s largest employers, with nearly 2,500 workers.
