ROCKFORD — It’s best if you don’t know what’s waiting for you inside Twisted Crypt.
The haunted house thrives on surprising you with what’s lurking in the dark.
“I don’t want to give too much away,” Peter Dunn, co-founder and co-owner of Twisted Crypt Productions said of this year’s setup at 5420 E. State St., near the former Circuit City building.
“We’re 10,000 square feet of indoor chaos,” he said. “You never know what’s going to pop out.”
The haunted house has returned for its eighth season after skipping last year because of concerns over the coronavirus. COVID-19 protections are in place this year, so the performers aren’t the only ones who need to wear masks.
The haunted house operates on weekends through Halloween and has close to 40 crew members waiting inside to scare you.
“A lot of them are veterans and they’ve been doing this since year one,” Dunn said.
Among the actors is Amanda Powers of Rockford, who won the Jim Warfield Acting Award in 2019 for best acting at a haunted attraction. She’s playing “Mama” this year, a blood-soaked deranged mother figure who lurks in the haunted house.
